Atlas and Globe ..
These were two important locii of anyone's geographical knowledge before the advent of Wikimapia and Google Maps on the net.
Globe--Thanks to the Recreation Centre in Shaktinagar, we got a globe at home.
I was in class 2 and the impression of that object still remains for long in my cerebral hemisphere.I saw the place where I was born(Nagpur) and the nearest place to our then current location (Varanasi).They seemed to be so close to each other on the globe.Travelling time via train is 24hrs between the 2 places.
In that case, travelling the world would have taken an eternity.(That was what the globe made me think).
Things might have been like this a century back ,but thanks to the genius who have made the world a small place to live in, we no longer think in those terms.
For the first time the globe introduced me to places that were going to be a part of our general knowledge and geography.(School Subjects I still like more than Science till date).Maths was my first love,but seems to be angry with me these days :(
Atlas--Got hold of this book from the great Goel Pratishthan at Shopping Centre in class 5th.

This is a real book that brings to life ,things that the Globe misses.
One gets another perspective of the world -
The world where Physical Features are also a deciding factor as much as the Political Ones.
The World where the fight for natural resources is as much as that for Industrialization .
The World where Economy and Population are correlated.
The World that can look an eternity to travel via roads but no time via Aircrafts.
All this gyaan is bestowed in this seemingly boring book with so many artifacts and pictures.
One should always read books and do less of internet.
For books keep you in the real world.The Matrix of the web is virtual and will always keep missing the personal touch.
